For some time now Clanhost has been sponsoring the "King of the Hill" (KotH) cup for Counter-Strike: Source (CS:S) organized by the ESL. We have decided to increase the stakes for this cup. The winner is now able to receive some prize money. We hope to give the CS:S scene a boost with this initiative.
The KotH concept is rather simple; with each new cup a single elimination tournament is held between 16 clans to determine the new challenger of the reigning King. The current King cannot compete in this cup for obvious reasons. The winner of this tournament will play the current King in a best-of-three match. The 11th edition of the cup has just been played and we are currently awaiting the match between the challenger and the King.
Currently the prize exists of a private Counter-Strike: Source game server provided by Clanhost. To make the cup a lot more interesting Clanhost has decided to increase the stakes by introducing a monetary prize. You are now able to win up to € 500,- in this cup. With this change in the prize there will also be a few changes to the current formula. Although the details have yet to be worked out, the concept will be as follows.
The total amount Clanhost is sponsoring is € 500,-. The next winner of the best-of-three match can choose between winning a certain amount now, or perhaps win a larger amount in the future if they win the next match, and so on. The increase of prize money is listed below.
- first victory: € 50,-
- second victory: € 150,-
- third victory: € 300,-
- fourth victory: € 500,-
For a King to win the entire prize of € 500,- they must be able to remain at their position for at least four cups. If the King chooses to take the amount they have currently gathered, they will have to leave the cup and are excluded from entering the next two rounds. If the King looses, and if they have chosen for an higher amount at the next victory, they go home empty handed. The longer the King remains at their position the higher the stakes will be, and the more exiting the cup will become.
At mentioned before this is a new concept and the details plus rules have yet to be worked out. This will be done by the admins of the ESL. When more information becomes available it will be published on the website of Gamelux and Clanhost. Depending on the outcome of this concept Clanhost is considering to sponsoring future cups with prize money also.
